Abstract
Healthcare policy makers and providers put considerable efforts into improving quality of care by transforming healthcare systems to focus on patient-centered care. The aim of this study is to identify organizational factors associated with patient experience in the inpatient setting. Toward this end, we employed multivariate robust regression using patient experience evaluation administered by health insurance review and assessment services (HIRA), inpatient quality indicators, and hospitals¡¯ structural and operational characteristics. The principal findings are as follows. First, we observed a positive association between patient experience and quality of care measured by hospitals¡¯ adherence to the recommended care and guideline. Second, we observed a positive association between patient experience and hospital nurse staffing measured by nurse-to-bed ratio. Other organizational factors found to be associated with the patient experience included: types of hospital, hospital size, proportion of private or semi-private patient rooms, and proportion of medical specialists. Based on our findings, we delineated several implications for policy and practice below.
